SEASON 2000/01 PANATHINAIKOS CM 00/01

Greece Premier Division - 2nd
Olympiakos was out of reach, we were playing really good but they just smashed everything. They won the league with 84 points (no losts) and we finished second with 69 points. Olympioakos lost points only in 3 games and two of those three was against Panathinaikos (draws 1:1 and 2:2).

Greek Cup - WINNER
I don't know where was Olympiakos in this one but thankfuly we did not face them. First we played in group with Kalithea, Ethnikos, Karditsa, Thesprotos and AEK. We won it easy. Than in 3rd Round we beat Neapoli 2:1, things got serious. In Quater finals we won Xanthi 4:1 on aggregate. In Semi Final we beat PAOK after close two games and in the Final... it was AEK again and again we won easily 4:1.

Champions League - Group Stage 1
We start in qualifications against Maribor, no problems to go trough. In group with Leeds, Bayern and Sparta Prague we struggle with Leeds for second place. Points are even but they got better goal difference.

UEFA CUP - Semi Final
In 3rd Round we beat RC Lens 6:2 on aggregate. In 4th round things got close with Feyenoord but away goals give us succes. In Quater Final we beat Udinese 2:1 and draw HJK Helsinki in the semis. I thought it whould be easy win but those Fin's knew what their were doing. We lost both games and got konocked out.

GORAN VLAOVIC SCORED 47 GOALS in 57 GAMES (22 league, 10 cup, 15 Europe)!!!

Memorable Matches
30.05.1997 - Kalamata 2:3 Panathinaikos - Greece Cup FINAL
My first season as a manager was very dissapointing. We did everything we could but it was just not enough to get at least a place in the first twelve. At the begining we did not focus on cup at all, sure we did our best but it was not our main target. Things got serious when we reached the semi-final. I still think we had a lot luck in this competition and semi final against AEK is a pure example of that. In the final game we had to play against Panathinaikos and we knew it is going to be tough, but on the other hand we had nothing to lose and some confidence after beating AEK. The game started with Panathinaikos being all over us. They did everything to score an early goal but that did not happened. Another doze of luck made the players belived that faith is on their side again. Panathinaikos got a bit tired and at the end of the second half we managed to create this single counter attack that has given us a goal!!! During the brake we were sure that this is our day and I've never seen this team so confident. But Panathinaikos was way stronger and we just could not put ourselfs agains this power no matter how hard we tried. We defended as hard as we could but the 70th minute came and they scored 2 goals in no time. With nothing to lose players decided to put everthing they have and try to equalise. I couldn't belive my eyes when they scored a goal in 90th minute and there we were in the extra time. We were sure that we won't score more, becouse team was exhausted, we could only hope not to lose more goals and count on luck in the penalties. But there were no pens, Panathinaikos scored in 112th minute and won the Cup.

06.09.2000 - Panathinaikos 5:1 AEK - Greece Cup group
Last game of the group stage in the Greece Cup. This one was to decide who will win the group. AEK had 12 points after 4 games and we got only 10. We were on a good reel winning last 3 games but you never know what will happen in the derby game. After a boring half of hour Pfilipsen scored the first goal. Six minutes later Sipniefski put a great cross to Karagunis who dribbled the defender and scored the second goal. We thought that half time score is secured but AEK thought different and Ruiz managed to give them hope in 42th minute. Well they say hope is a mother of fools. Second half was one way traffic, first Koutsoures scored with a long distance shoot and in the last two minutes of the game he got another one the same way. Vlaovic added his part in the stoppage with a beautyful header. We ruled in Athens that evening and I got the fans respect and credit.

17.09.2000 - Panathinaikos 3:1 Ionikos - Greece Premier Division
I had some unfinished buissnes with Ionikos. They fired me two years ealier and I'm not saying I did not deserved it, but they did it in the worst possible way. I almost ended my manager carrier after that. Now it was time to make things even. I did not motivate the players in a special way, for them it was just another league game we have to win to chase after Olympioakos. First I was a bit nervous but in 26th minute Liberopoulos scored and I started to get my satisfaction. In the second half Liberopoulos scored another one and you could imagine the smile on my face. A late goal for Ionikos spoiled the party for a second but few seconds later Warzycha scored for 3:1 - Eat this Ionikos!

24.09.2000 - Kalamata 0:1 Panathinaikos - Greece Premier Division
Kalamata is a special club for me. Played there for almost two decades, born and raised in the city. Started my manager carrier in there and went to the Greece Cup Final with the team. Fans given me such a worm welcome and were scanding my name several times in the whole game. In the half time players were shocked and I had to explain most of them that this is my home. Before the game I didn't wanted to disturb their concentration telling stories from the past. Warzycha knew becouse we used to play against eachother back in the days but most of the squad had no idea. The game was even and I'm sure that Kalamata was extra focused and players put everything they have. Thankfuly we scored in the stoppege (Koutsoures) and got the 3 points. At the end of the season they did not mean anything and if I knew that then I probably be happier with the 0:0 draw - Se La Vi.

27.09.2000 - Panathinaikos 2:0 Sparta Prague - Champions League Stage 1
Champions League is always something special. I can't imagine it becoming a common thing even if you win it three times a row. We qualify to the Group stage after beating Maribor Teatanic eaisly. First two games we lost against Leeds and Bayern and game against Sparta was to be or not to be for us. Boy it was nervous. We attacked like hell but it just didn't want to go in. Fans went crazy when I decided to replace Vlaovic with Warzycha in half time. They loved the polish striker and had all the respect in the world for him but at the moment Vlaovic was a goal machine and Warzycha had his years. I don't smoke but if I had a package of cigarettes with me I whould fire one after another. Minutes passed and goal did not came. 89th minute we had a free kick. Pfilipsen decided to take it. He shoot as strong as he could and the ball difflected by Rene Bolf landed in the net! Stadium exploded with joy. Czech's were devastated as they were so close to secure their first point in the campain. They did not even try to use the last few minutes of stoppage to equalise, they were just standing like they could not belive what happened. Meanwhile Warzycha put on a decent run and scored the second goal right before the final whistle - Ufff, my first win in Champions League.

14.10.2000 - AEK 1:3 Panathinaikos - Greece Premier Division
Another derby game. After winning with Sparta in Champions League we were on fire. Everyone in the club was already thinking about the game in Prague and if we can still go trough to the next round. But fans were serious about AEK, as always when it came to derby game. After 5:1 in the cup AEK wanted and needed blood. I was seriously concered about this one but for the players it looked like winning against AEK was just something they had to do before they can go outside and have fun. 3 goals in the first half (2 by Vlaovic and 1 by Kola) and basicly it was all over. In the second half we just waste time and play safe. AEK scored one goal but that was all. AEK stadium was half empty after the first half - priceless.

17.10.2000 - Panathinaikos 3:1 Sparta Prague - Champions League Groupe Stage 1
3 days after beating AEK in derby we had to win in Prague. This was the last chance to go back into the race for next round promotion. First game against Sparta was a thriller this one was a walk in the park. Vlaovic scored the first goal after six minutes and Sparta stoped fighting after that. Another one form Vlaovic came in the 34th minute. Right before half time Rene Bolf scored, but this time it was not an own goal and Sparta had still something to fight for in the second half. The had to play an open football and we took advantege of that by scoring third goal (Sigurdsson). Week later against Leeds we still had something to play for.

25.10.2000 - Panathinaikos 1:0 Leeds - Champions League Group Stage 1
It's not easy to play against an English side, specialy when they defend. It was a though game and bones were crushing. We needed that win and Leeds needed a draw. It was an ugly football out there but Vlaovic made the difference in 57th minute with a touch of genius. This time we knew that main focus is to take this score to the final whistle and I take it as a great success that we made that happen. In last game we needed to win against Bayern to advance. They already won the league so we seriously hoped that we can do it. We were counting on an German - English hate a bit. On the day of a game a got an information that the Bayern coach said that if we play really good we will win. But what really happened was them playing fools with us. They scored than they let us score to make the game more interesting, this madness ended in 9:6 for Bayern and on the press conference Blakerman made a fool out of me and my team. I never was that humiliated before and hope to get revange one day.

23.11.2000 - Panathinaikos 3:1 RC Lens - UEFA CUP 3rd Round
We were a bit devastated after losing in Champions League but soon we rised hope for a UEFA Cup success. In 3rd round we were playing against French RC Lens. After Bayern everyone in Greece was laughing and the press claimed we putted a shame on Greek football. That made us so angry that before you know we were leading by 3 goals against Lens. It ended 3:1 and all the talking stopped.

07.12.2000 - RC Lens 1:3 Panathinaikos - UEFA CUP 3rd Round
After that game I knew that I'm not the only one determinated to win the UEFA Cup. Players were with me in this one and after 67 minutes we were leading 3:0 in an away game! Again Lens managed to score a single goal but 6:2 on aggregate with a French team, that was something that made everyone in Greece forget about the lost against Bayern.

21.01.2001 - Ionikos 1:2 Panathinaikos - Greece Premier Division
After the first game I totaly fargot about Ionikos case. When you fight in Champions League and UEFA Cup, when you're in the chase for the title you don't have time to trouble yourself with some small club that once fired you. But the second I arrived on their stadium it all came back. I was still a rookie manager and most fans did not care much about my person, exept Pana and Kalamata, but they loved me. Well, Ionikos fans hated the hell out of me. For all the game they did not focus one anything but yelling and cursting on me. I stopped caring after 26 minutes when Pfilipsen scored. But Ionikos equalised and fans went crazy. I just wanted to put their money were their mouths were so I had fingers crossed we will win this one. Giorgios Alexopoulos was never my pupil and short after that game he was given away on a free transfer but I will always be thankful that he scored that winning goal in that game.

11.02.2001 - Panathinaikos 3:2 AEK Athens - Greec Premier Division
As a Panathinaikos coach you always remember the AEK games, it's like fans don't even care what happens for the rest of the season. They whould forgive you not winning the league if you don't lose with AEK. This time the game was pretty close. After 35 minutes we were losing due to Nikolaidis goal, but right before half time we managed to score not one but two goals. Fans went crazy after that but AEK did not surrender. In 81th minute Konstantinidis scored an equaliser and things got really nervous. Thank God we had Paulo Sousa on our side that night - 3 minutes before the end he scored the winning goal.

08.03.2001 - Panathinaikos 2:1 Feyenoord - UEFA CUP 4th Round
In the first away game we lost 2:3 and at one point we were leading 2:1, wich shows how close that game was. We really needed only one goal to go to the next round and that's what we focused on. It's hard to explain for someone who is not in this buissnes but sometimes you score a goal too early. That's what happened here. Vlaovic scored in 13th minute and we kind of did not know what to do with the rest of the game. Defend or attack? So we started to defend and with an even teams and that much time left in the game it always ends one way. Feyenoord scored in 68th minuted and we had 20 minutes to score or say good bye. Thankfully Vlaovic was in he's groove that day and it took us only five minutes to score the winner.

15.03.2001 - Udinese 0:2 Panathinaikos - UEFA CUP Quater Final
Udinese was another tough rival in UEFA CUP. But I guess they underrated us a bit in the first game. We put a solid performance and after an hour of close game they were so frustraited that mistakes started to happen. Kola took advantage of the first one, he actually tried to pass the ball to Vlaovic, missed but it was going for goal and I guess keeper was having an afternoon nap becouse he did not reacted in the right time. Right before the end Udinese fell a sleep again, this time keeper was on his feet but the defence was in the dreamland and after a nice action by the team Vlaovic scored a header after Saric cross. In the second game Italians shown their real potential and won 1:0, if they were playing like this in both legs they whould sure go trough. In the semi final we lost in both games against HJK Helsinki and that was the end of UEFA CUP for us.

01.04.2001 - Giannena 0:5 Panathinaikos - Greece Premier Division
Actually game like every other but I remeber it as my biggest win as a manager so far. Giannena was rather not a strong side, they finished last in the table, but still an away 5:0 win is something. Sipniefski who is one of my favourite players in the squad scored a hat-trick and Saric with Pfilipsen done the rest of the damage.

16.05.2001 - Panathinaikos 4:1 AEK - Greece Cup FINAL
Last game of the season. We knew that it is the last chance to win something in this campain and that was the best motivation for the players. We had a great season with some epic wins, but in all the other competitions the luck turned on us on some point. We already won with AEK 3 times this season so it was not a big deal for the players. It was for the fans and sure was for the fans of the oposition. Two days before the game a fan came to me when I was shopping in the market and told me that we did great job this season and that no one is angry about the championship or UEFA CUP, as long as we beat AEK in the Cup Final. Imagine what a big rock fell of m back when Sigurdsson scored a goal in the second minute of the game. Saric scored the second in 33th minute and Pfilipsen given the third in 39th. I knew that we won't lose this game and that I whould be able to walk proud in Athens for another few months. AEK had some tries but even they did not belive that things can turn around. In 88th minutes Zagorakis scored for 3:1 but right after that Warzycha made it 4:1 and we won the GREECE CUP! THAT IS MY FIRST TROPHY!
